You don't mention what the 4 or 5 hosts do. If you want failover, you absolutely need 2 hosts. It's the hardware that VMWare runs on that will dictate if it can handle the loads you put on it. VMware has nothing really to do with the load. You would be looking at VMware Essential which allows you to backup live VMs, vMotion, not sure about load balancing. or maybe load balance between the two and if one fail the other physical server will take over? Is this possible with two server or do i need 3 physical server? Also what vpshere will do that? will the standard version work.
